Here's the self-check. It takes about twenty minutes and costs nothing.
Step one: test the crack, don't just look at it. Mark both ends of the crack with a pencil line and write today's date next to it. Measure the width at the widest point with a ruler or a crack gauge. Then leave it alone for six to eight weeks and measure again. A stable crack that hasn't lengthened or widened is telling you the movement that caused it has already happened. A crack that has grown is telling you the movement is active.
Step two: check whether the crack is tapered or parallel. Uniform movement tends to produce cracks of relatively even width. Differential movement produces cracks that are wider at one end than the other, because the wall is rotating, not just separating. A crack that's 4mm at the top and hairline at the bottom is describing a shape, and the shape is a corner going down.
Step three: measure floor level at two points, not one. Put a golf ball or a marble on the floor in the middle of a room. If it rolls, note which way. Then do it in a room on the opposite side of the house. Uniform settlement means floors stay roughly level relative to each other, even if the whole slab has dropped an inch. Differential movement means one side reads noticeably lower than the other, and the direction of the slope points toward where support is being lost [3][7].
Step four: check the openings for distortion, not just sticking. A door that sticks might just be humidity swelling the wood. A door frame that's no longer square, where the gap at the top tapers from 2mm on one side to 8mm on the other, is geometry. Geometry doesn't come from humidity.
Run all four and you'll usually have your answer. Stable cracks, level-relative floors, square frames: uniform, low urgency. Growing tapered cracks, floors out of level between rooms, racked frames: differential, and worth a professional opinion soon.
